Regarding AWE Ending - Please Read? (SPOILERS)
« Thread Started on May 26, 2007, 5:05pm »

I decided to start this thread because I stumbled across some information about AWE I think everyone should read. It seems due to some mucked-up editing the movie was a lot more ambiguous than the writers wanted it to be, and the actual ending... well, it's a little different than I (and I know a lot of others) first thought.

Apologies for the big post to follow. ;)

Maybe you were one of the few who managed to figure out what it really meant, but I thought the ending of the Will and Elizabeth story was that they could only see each other once every 10 years. Will would serve as Captain for eternity. The couple would only see each other a few more times during Elizabeth's life. Giving their love-story a tragic, bittersweet feel about it.

Apparently... that's not the case. The real ending? A lot happier! :D

I first saw a post here talking about it, which linked me to here (Ted and Terry's website). Searching back through the website takes you to some very informative posts here and http://www.wordplayer.com/forums/movies/index.cgi?read=98678]here[/url] (and a lot of others, but I'm being concise).

I'll summarise what Ted and Terry say:

***

1) The curse of being Captain of the Dutchman in fact should only last for those first 10 years.

2) So why did Davy Jones serve for ages, stretching into eternity? The answer: He returned home, found his love was untrue, carved out his heart and abandoned his task. It was his own fault (and sort of Calypso's fault, for prompting his anger).

3) Will had to serve for 10 years, and 10 years only. He did that, completed his mission, returned home and found out Elizabeth did wait for him. Therefore no angsty Will, therefore no abandoning his task, therefore the curse is over for him.

4) The green flash we see in the post-credits scene means that Will has returned to life. He's no longer a dead captain, but free from any and all curses to live happily ever after with Elizabeth and his little boy.

5) It's left deliberately ambiguous as to who is the Captain of the Dutchman now. As for his heart I believe (though the writers don't explicitly confirm this), when he's reunited with Elizabeth and his heart, his heart goes magically back in his chest.

***

According to the writers, this was pretty obvious in the original film - but numerous scenes were cut, which made it a lot more unclear. Hopefully they'll be on the DVD. These scenes are also (according to those who have them) included in various novelisations of the movie. Hints are still in AWE - Jones talking about how he was doomed because Calypso betrayed him, and the clarifying that the green light means a soul returns from the dead - but I didn't pick up on that. And I know a lot of others didn't too. :-/

...But, yes. It's actually a lot more of a happy ending than I first thought. Happily Ever After, in fact! Will and Elizabeth are together again, and free to settle down or go off on adventures as they so choose.

Just thought you guys should know this in case you made the same mistake as me. ;D

Edit: A quick edit to add that Ted and Terry's forums are now going to be "offline from Saturday at 4:30p until Monday at 10:30a (Pacific)" - probably due to a huge load of people coming over to look at them after AWE.

But I copied two quotes for you guys, one from Ted:

Quote:
Ted Elliott:

That green flash was what Terry was referring to when he said it was possible, but very difficult, to figure out from the movie that the curse was broken.

And here's a conversation Terry had with another poster ("curious mate"):

Quote:
curious mate:

Majorly confused about several plot points ... but so I can be clear ... this means Will was forbidden to see Liz during 10 years, right?

And she was true to him and then the green flash means the curse was broken (although it is not made clear in the movie).

But that was your narrative intention?

Quote:
Terry:

I don't know that I would say, "forbidden." There might be some story to be told where Elizabeth manages to make a trip to the land of the dead, with the help of someone, etc., etc., to find Will, etc.

But the basic requirement is that Will agrees captain the Flying Dutchmen (in return for what the film reveals) and that he can step on land but once every ten years, and that at any time, if he finds a love that is true (this is part of the original Flying Dutchman opera by the way) then his attachment to the ship is broken.

Hope that helps! :-*

OMG! I cannot tell you how happy that made me. (I needed this closure as you could see in my previous posts)

I feel like an idiot for not catching the meaning of that green flash. EEE! I am so happy now. It IS a perfect movie! I knew it!

I wonder if Bootstrap would take over after...

Hmm... I kind of liked the bittersweet ending not being clarified. Plus I always figured that Elizabeth could just go to sea and meet Will sometimes... or maybe I missing something and thats impossible.

At least all our fics won't be insanely inaccurate with Will in them, as I worried about after the movie. Haha... leave it to me to be concerned with such things.

I just didnt get why Elizabeth couldnt go out on a ship and have will come over to it. I mean Jones went on other ships so why couldnt Will right?

It all makes sense now though. Thankyou

I sort of wished he hadn't shown up in the end. I thought it would have been really neat if the ending clip closed with the view of the flash without actually showing Will. That may just be me though and I tend to like those sort of endings. But the question - Did he show up? would have been pretty cool.

THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY WTF.

Aww. Goodness, they deserved a happy ending. I mean, they go through so much crap with their romance that they really need to just... be together. It's all they ever wanted - the first movie makes that obvious. <3

DAWWWWW. Much as I liked the sad side of the ending, I do like this clarification. I must admit that I did think about Pintel's line about the green flash signalling the return of the soul from the dead, but dismissed it. And indeed, there was the flash at the after-credits scene. That's awesome.

I admit I wasn't clear on the Davy thing and the ten years, I also thought the captaincy of the Dutchman was for life. Then again, Bootstrap does say "One day on land, ten years at sea. That's a steep price to be paid for what's done." But again, I figured that was a generalization, that after every ten years the captain can come on land for one day.

This info made me happy. :)

Bree and Kimmie: I understood this thing so from the last two movies that the Flying Dutchman can't just appear out of the blue to anyone - she only comes to claim those dead or dying, just like in DMC and the ship that Will goes to (the one the Kraken has attacked). It's different obviously in AWE since Beckett has the heart and so commands Davy/Dutchman and which ships the Dutchman shows to/attacks. But I understood that normally, the Dutchman does not sail like regular ships do but only comes when needed (the dead and dying part, as Davy said it himself to Will - "You are neither dead nor dying. What is your purpose here?") so I don't think the Dutchman goes out to other ships with living people. So in my understanding, Elizabeth couldn't just take a ship out and meet Will at the sea, living and breathing as she is. And also, Bootstrap explains it in AWE - "Where we are going, she can't follow." They still have to keep on guiding the dead over to the other side. And, the Dutchman does disappear at the end of AWE, giving an implication that she sails in otherworldly waters where mortals cannot follow - or at least that's the feeling it gave to me. :)

That was probably not explained so well, my apologies. XD

Thanks so much for the info!!!! ;D That made me so happy!

I did like the ending when I though he had to serve for eternity, but I felt so sorry for him. So I'm glad he doesn't have to! :D

Aw, this is so great, thanks for posting this! I hate when they cut scenes that are important to the plot. I think, as well, that since opening night was so effin crazy and I got stuck in the first row, that had a lot to do with my not understanding everything right away because I couldn't really see everything from that horrible angle. I really need to find the time to see it again, and keep these things in mind :)
